BIG4 Taunton Farm rescues two historic buildings!

The owners of BIG4 Taunton Farm Holiday Park in Margaret River have recently “rescued” two historic buildings from around the town of Cowaramup – a former school and an old church – and have transported them to Taunton Farm. They did this largely because they did not want to see the buildings fall in ruin.

Over the past 4 years, park owners, Rob and Julie Saunders have been restoring the two buildings – the Cowaramup School 1924 and Congregational Church 1928. They have done a stunning job bringing back the old timber floors and window frames and have also found a few treasures along the way, such as historic coins, which have been mounted with resin in the floor.

The official opening of the restored buildings was on Sunday 23rd of March, and saw over 250 ex-students, interested friends and those with associated links attended the opening of the Historic Function Centre. The official opening was performed by The Hon. Barry House MLC, member for the South West, with the unveiling of a plaque. He then invited Valerie Clews, one of a few remaining teachers of the school complex, to cut the ribbon. Representatives from the Shire of Augusta / Margaret River, the City of Busselton, Tourism Associations, Historical Societies and many other community groups were present. The occasion was an excellent opportunity for locals and those from far afield to catch up with friends and renew acquaintances.

The buildings will be available for hire for function hire and local events and have already attracted a great deal of interest from wedding planners. The honour of the first wedding though will go to Rob and Julie’s daughter who is to be married there.

BIG4 Taunton Farm is a quaint holiday park and working farm right in the heart of the Margaret River wine and food region of Western Australia. The park is popular with couples and families looking to explore the nearby limestone caves, wineries, surf beaches and whale watching cruises.

The park itself is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy a peaceful rural environment. The working farm is a hit with families as kids can get up close and personal with the farm animals by feeding the sheep, camels and cows.
