No matter the time of year, Bunbury has plenty to keep anglers immersed. This thriving Western Australian city is surrounded by alluring waterways that are ideal for fishing. The team at Discovery Holiday Parks – Koombana Bay has the inside word on where to try your luck.
Fishing in Bunbury is like taking a walk down the confectionery aisle of your local supermarket – it’s full of options! Whether in the species of fish on offer or the places to dangle a line, Bunbury provides a level of variety that will satisfy all anglers.
When it comes to Bunbury’s best fishing spots, try the following:
- The Cut: on the rocks or jetty or in a boat
- Back Beach: on the rocks or in a boat
- Dalyellup Beach: off the beach or in a boat
- Buffalo Beach: off the beach
- Pelican Point: in a boat
- Collie River: off the bridge or in a boat
In warmer weather, the main species to look for are King George whiting, snook, herring, yellowfin, leather jacket, and sea sweep. In cooler conditions, expect to find mulloway and salmon, while year round dhufish and pink snapper are plentiful.
In addition, if river fishing you can catch black brim, mulloway, crabs, cobbler, tailor, trout, and redfin perch. From the beach, you are likely to land mulloway, salmon (March to May), flathead, and skippy.
Or how about trying your luck crabbing? You can legally catch crabs by hand or with drop nets or scoops nets. Crabbing is great fun for all the family, and there are a few ideal spots in walking distance from our park. Try to catch a few good size crabs for a nice meal.
When fishing in Bunbury, the best baits to use are squid, octopus, mulies, and prawns. If you are crabbing with nets, use spleen. All bait is available in the reception area of our park.
Please note: while fishing is productive year round in fine weather, a boat fishing closure is in place from 15 October-15 December. However, you can still fish off the beach or from the rocks.
We’d love to see you at Discovery Holiday Parks – Koombana Bay for your next fishing adventure!
